Crab-a-licious


 

 

Materials

 

Hook:  Sz 2 – 1/0 short shank (Gamakatsu SC15 or equivalent)

Thread:  Clear mono (UTC monofil .006 or equivalent)

Weight:  Soft Lead

Glue:  Thinned Goop, 5 minute epoxy & Sally Hansen Hard-as-Wraps

Paint: Acrylic tan

Weedguard:  20# mono

Eyes:  Burnt mono

Mouth: Craft Fur

Feelers:  Midge Flash

Shell:  Sheep Wool

Claws:  Mallard Flanks

Legs:  Tufts of webby saddle hackle barbs

 

 

Tying Instructions

 

  1. At the hook bend, tie in several strands of midge flash for feelers.
  2. Tie in a clump of orange craft for the mouth of the crab and trim closely to hook bend.
  3. Tie in mono eyes extending to the rear of the hook.
  4. Work toward the hook eye, stacking clumps of wool.
  5. Trim the wool to create the top shell of the crab.
  6. Create the two claws from mallard shank feathers.  Coat the feathers in thinned Goop glue for durability.
  7. Glue the claws to the underside of the wool shell facing the rear of the hook.
  8. Pull tufts of webby barbs from the stem of saddle hackle for the legs of the crab.
  9. Glue the legs to the underside of the wool shell facing the hook eye.
  10.  Flatten and trim Soft Lead to create the underside shell of the crab.
  11.  Glue lead bottom shell to the wool top shell with 5minute epoxy.
  12.  Paint the lead with acrylic paint.
  13. Coat the dried paint with Hard as Wraps
  14. Tie in a two prong mono weedguard at the hook eye.
