Now fly fishermen can benefit
from the action found in the diving plugs of conventional
tackle. The main attribute of this this fly is the
incorporation of a Fly Lipp (www.flylipps.com)
in the lip down position. The lip causes the fly to dive
and "dance" on the strip. A foam popper head forms an
intricate part of the pattern. Foam on the top side of the
hook shank ensures proper tracking and enhanced wiggle when the
fly is stripped. Tie up a few of these guys and that
irresistible action of a diving plug is yours in a fly!
Materials:
1/0 Mustad S71SSS (or equiv.
standard shank hook)
Fly Lipp
UTC Monofil .006 mono thread
Wapsi “Perfect Popper” size 4
¼” stick on eyes
Red permanent marker
Polor Flash (colors of your choice)
Sally Hansen Hard as Wraps
5 & 30 minute epoxy
Step 1
Tie in a Fly Lipp in the down
position. Tie in two clumps of Polar Flash on the topside
of the hook just in front of the hook bend. Secure and cut thread.

Step 2
Widen the slit in the foam head
with a file so that the head will slip over the hook shank. Place the
foam head on the hook shank with the cupped portion facing the
rear of the hook. Keep all but a small portion of the foam
on the topside of the hook and leave a small gap between the
head and hook eye. Adhere with 5 minute epoxy.

Step 3
Attach thread between the hook
eye and foam head. Cut a portion of Polar Flash then fold and
cut in half. Work the hair back
an forth in your fingers to give a tapered effect. Tie in
the portion so that a slightly shorter length is facing forward
of the
fly. Continue applying portions of Polar Flash until you
have worked your way around the head; I use four portions (both sides,
bottom and top). Secure and cut thread.

Step 4
Apply a thin layer
of 30 minute epoxy around the head portion of Polar Flash. Pull the
forward half of Polar flash back toward the rear of the fly.
Wet the rear of the fly or use a twist-tie to keep the Polar
Flash pulled back. Apply another layer of 30 minute epoxy
around the head of the fly. Let dry. Stick on eyes
and draw on gills with red permanent marker. Coat epoxy
with Hard as Wraps. Let dry. Trim hair
to give a tapered profile from the side and top. (note:
a thin layer of Plasti-Dip or Loon Hard Head can be used in place of
epoxy & Hard as Wraps)

Options
Trim the Fly Lipp to
adjust the dive and
wiggle. Try tying this pattern with alternative materials
such as a blend of Slinky Fiber and Angle Hair. This
pattern tied without the Fly Lipp is a great fly, as well.
